Molalla is truly a special doe. From the moment she came out long, lean and beautiful I knew I had something special on my hands. She has an air about her that attracts attention. It’s just her gift. In terms of where I want my breeding program to go, Mo is my role model for the younger generations.
Molalla is the start of my Oregon towns name line. When I picked up her dam Scio at Laurie Acton’s house, she told me that I could name her, but to keep in mind that line of LaMancha were named after special ladies in her life. Scio, the hometown of my best friend Caitlin whom I met in college was just over the hill from Laurie’s. Caitlin and I had spent quite a bit of time there developing our friendship that was so special. So I named the little doeling Scio after my friend Cait’s hometown.
When Scio kidded for the first time, and this gorgeous kid came out I named her after the town where Laurie who had given me the opportunity to own Scio lived, Molalla. And so the Oregon name game began. I have had a lot of fun with it as I went to College in Oregon, and grew quite close to many of their big cities, and small towns.
To describe Mo in a few words, long, tall and milky come to mind, which is our Goat-San mantra. She is extremely feminine and elegant. Mo is very correct with a strong topline, good feet and legs, and beautiful dairy strength. Her mammary system is capacious and well attached.
Mo started strong in the show ring. She was BJDIS as a kid at the Sonoma County Fair, and finished her championship easily as a yearling! Molalla is the first LaMancha milker with the Goat-San herd name to be shown at a National Show, and she did amazing placing 2nd/2U in her class in 2012. Only shown one time in 2013 she was champion and best udder at the Sonoma County Fair.
The beginning of 2014 was amazing for Mo, she was milking over 14 pounds a day and was feeling great...and then tragedy struck. Mo contracted clinical mastitis, and I lost the functionality of half of her udder. Because I have to take all of the milkers with me when we show, I dried her off, which was no small task. She was trying to pump 14 pounds a day out of one side! While I don’t expect she will be a show doe anymore, she is certainly still beautiful, and will be a brood doe for many years to come.
